C.A.P

1.Clarity
For the typographical conveyance, I had a hard time distinguishing them from word portraits. I feel that this was one of the harder assignments for me. This was a new concept for me and difficult for me to think creatively. I think the literal, stylistic and thematic messages could be presented more clearly. The two images that I do think display these factors somewhat clearly however are ‘brick’ and ‘atom’. The goal of the assignment was for each word to be represented as meaningful and reflect the word portrayed. Each different word then essentially was working towards the same goal. These typographical images are very simple in concept, theme and message and to the point. I don’t believe that there is much room for misrepresentation but there is always room for improvement. Since these images are so simple there is no more than one message that is trying to gain the viewers attention. There is only a single word with a background making it very hard for conflicting messages to exist.

2.Audience
The target viewer for these pieces I believe would be people who read magazines or view many advertisements. I believe that the client will think that their primary audience will be the same. I could see these images possibly in some type of advertisement as a part of a bigger image. The visual tastes of the demographic segment would most likely be individuals active in visual media and also updated on the newest trends of what constitutes for a good advertisement. To be sure of my conclusions I could take a poll or survey and really find out if the demographics were accurate to my thought process or not. The tone of these images of typographical conveyance should have a very simple but easy to understand concept. Viewers should be able to look at the word and how it is depicted and be able to understand the concept. There isn’t much lingo to go off of in these images but the one that stands out as lingo is “XXL’ which stands for extra extra large which I think almost all of the audience would respond to because it is so well known. I think that different colors need to be used that match the word. I don’t think that there would be a specific set of colors that the audience is looking for with this type of assignment. I don’t believe that any of the images talk to down to the audience or fly over their heads only because they are so simple and easy to follow. The images can in some ways convey an emotion and bring about an understanding of a similar meaning. Some of the images I believe do stand apart from what the audience has seen. One that is going to be the most familiar to the audience is the ‘XXL’ image. For example, if the ‘XXL’ image were a person it would obviously be very large and easy to see. In contrast if ‘lightly’ was a person it would probably be someone very pale and shy who goes unnoticed. Both of the words that I described I believe that the audience would have the same view point. It is in a way stereotypical and that is what often times people refer to each other to make meanings of something or someone else.

3.Purpose
Each of these words is supposed to covey a powerful message to the viewers. I do not think the words are meant to sell a product but rather advertise or been seen as a logo maybe. The purpose of these words is more to inform than persuade the viewers of something. I have not discussed the purpose with my client but I image that they would believe that these words are more informative than persuasive. Like I have mentioned earlier, typographical conveyance was one of the harder assignments for me. I do however think that I have narrowed each piece as much as possible to allow the viewer to gather a meaningful concept. I tried to make the background of each image as simple as possible and let the attention be solely in the words. I think that by doing so, the words are able to stand out more and gain more attention by the viewers.

Typographical Conveyance

For this assignment we were asked to convey a particular feeling in a creative way through different words portrayed and use the strategies I've learned so far. I wanted to "reflect the meaning of the words they portray."

For "BRICK" I wanted the color to have a rusty brown color similar to actual brick and make the texture of the word the same.

For "lightly" I made the word appear very faint and a light blue. I did this to represent if someone were to write something very light and without much force or effort.

For "pillow" I wanted to word to appear fluffy and cloud-like. So changed the gradient of the background to fade from blue to white and made the lettering match as best as I could.

For "shred" I used puppet warp for all of the letters to make it appear very out of place and rough-looking. I also took the smudge tool and went used it to make the letters appear smeared.

For "XXL" I had the idea from an old sweatshirt that I used to have. There were huge letters in the middle of it with the name of a local team I used to play for. I used black and red because I feel that they are masculine colors and XXL is geared towards masculinity.

For "atom" I changed the text to have light colors that were easy on the eye. I then added rings around the word to represent an atom and used similar colors for the rings.

1.Clarity
For most of the pieces, if not all, the literal, stylistic and thematic messages I feel are clearly and efficiently presented. The first assignment, Gestalt I feel was one of the most clear messages that I did for this section of the blog. There was an obvious theme in my first picture with the row of suns, clouds and lightning bolts that referred to the weather. Whereas the second Gestalt picture represented an “X” by the connection of the arrows that were formed in a way in which the eyes make the connection on their own. I think the message for the Gestalt pieces are both working towards the same overall message and goal which is to allow your mind to unravel while your eyes pick up on the empty spaces and connect through process of the viewer. There is always room for misinterpretation of I believe in these messages. I feel this way because everyone has different views and outlooks on life and how they view the world. For the first picture of Gestalt there is defiantly a fighting message for attention because the viewer might not be sure as to which line to focus on or what the overall meaning could be conveying. I think for this particular piece, it is as simplified as possible and if it was changed, I don’t believe the impact would be so different.
Another assignment that I believe has a clear message presented is legibility and text safe areas. For this assignment I chose to do a beach background and had to find a way to match the text to the beach. “When the content of a backdrop is visually active, additional measures may be needed to give the viewer’s eye a change to find and read the type. Larger, bolder fonts may do the trick.” (P 180) I feel that the overall message and goal of this particular assignment is relaxation. I think that there is very little room for misrepresentation in this picture because the message is so simple and easy to identify with. Because of the simplicity, there are no messages fighting for attention here which I believe really represents clarity.
Lastly, I wanted to focus on the assignment fonts and images. This was the last assignment that I had and I’m glad it was because by that point I had learned so many other techniques and ways to show and reflect different aspects of things that this assignment ended up being relatively simple as well but showed I believe the most clarity. This was a thematic piece and I felt was very well represented. It was almost like an advertisement or an icon for a store that I wanted to convey. The goal here was to match the icon that I picked which was a musical note and make it into my own and add wording to match the flow of the note. There really is no room for misrepresentation in this piece just because it is so simple and clear single message which is a great way to exemplify clarity.

2.Audience
For audience I wanted to focus on one assignment in depth to answer all of the evaluation questions. I chose emotional design because this activity was the most challenging for me. The purpose of this assignment was to design a poster that would convey an emotion through an object. We chose an animated car to be our object and the emotion we picked was happiness. The target audience for this piece would most likely be children since the car is animated. The client, I believe would feel that their primary audience would be the same because the car is pleasing to the eye of a younger generation. The visual tastes of this demographic segment are how we tried to give the car human-like characteristics. Any type of bright and vibrant colors would draw the target audience to our piece. As I collaborated with a partner for this assignment we tried to match the colors of the different parts of the car to what a human would look like. For example, the tan color for the body of the car, the green headlights to represent the eyes and a red bumper to represent lips. If this car were a person, I image that it would look the same way. The tone of the concept that we created should be very light hearted, friendly and playful if it is to be well-received by young children which would be represented the same if the car were an actual person. The lingo that this target audience would respond to would most likely be happy music, laughter and simple phrases from the car if it were to have a certain ‘lingo’. I think children would enjoy this car based off the tone and attitude that I would want it to represent because it opens to the door for children to want to be happy and make a new friend. I don’t believe that this piece talks down to the target audience simply because of their age. Now if the target audience were college students, then yes because the animation and simplicity of the lingo that I would want the car to embody would talk down to college students. This poster can provide comfort to younger children as a means of friendship and adventure. I feel that this design is something that has already been seen before like off of the movie “Cars” but is different in its own way.

3.Purpose
For this section I really wanted to pick an assignment that was most purposeful for me which was the last assignment, fonts and images. This piece is supposed to represent a logo or symbol for a store. I would say isn’t no necessary meant to sell a product but more for advertising purposes. I used a musical note and ‘MARYS MUSIC’ along to the side to represent of my Aunt Mary was to have a music store. As Krause points out “Crop to improve compositional considerations such as the relative positioning of focal points, spacing and balance.” (P 192) This is exactly what I did to make the letters flow with the music piece and make it very pleasing to the eye. Since she is a music teacher I thought it would be a fun assignment to visualize. The product that is being promoted in this particular piece is music which can range from actual voice to a variety of instruments. I would say the purpose of this piece is to more inform viewers that persuade because the image is meant to get the message out there that this particular store is in existence. I have not really discussed the purpose of this with my client or director but I image she would feel somewhat similar while playing devil’s advocate of things I could improve on. I do believe that the purpose of this piece has been narrowed down and given the attention needed to exert as much power as possible for the time being. As I said before though, there is always room for improvement and ways to enhance and make something better. As of now though I feel as though I have the pieces needed to have a eye catching logo but contact information and an address would be needed to have a more focused presentation and fulfill the viewers needs.

Fonts and Images

For this assignment, I was asked to take an image from Photo-Shop and change it to make it my own. Similar to the icon assignment, I was then asked to insert text that would flow with the image I had just changed. I chose to do a music note and warp the note and make it more extreme and exaggerated. I chose to use MARYS MUSIC in all caps going vertically down the right side of the music note. I also wanted to use a sans serif font instead of a serif font to make it appear smooth and match the notes overall texture."Sometimes, as when constructing a log, letter-forms themselves need to be moved and altered to achieve ideal visual relations." (P 264) To make the words flow around the note effortlessly, I used puppet warp to move some of the letters around to form right around the note.

Word Portraits

For this assignment we were asked to take a word and make the font match the word and also do the opposite and take a word that you would never see matched to a certain font.
For the word creative I chose to match the text to the word by using a font that was anything but simple and displayed creativity

For the world children I chose to match the text to the word as well and had a playful font with different colors and a line going through it to represent anything but perfect

For the word homeless I chose to not match the text to the word. I used a very stylish and formal font, one in which you would probably most likely see in wedding invitation which is almost the complete opposite from being homeless.

For the word digital I chose to match the text to the word and use a font which you would most likely see as a default font for a computer which is a perfect representation of digital.

Emotional Design

For this assignment I worked with Laura and we were asked to take an object and make it show emotion. We chose a plain and very simple animated car off of Google to work with. We started by changing the appearance of the car by adding color. We used a tan color for the body of the car and made the bumper red for its lips. We wanted to convey the emotion happiness so we warped the bumper to make it smile. We also changed the color of the headlights to green to represent the eyes. We also added a license plate as well as a roof rack that could bee seen as hair or a hat, depending on how you looked at it I guess. For the hat or hair we took another image from Google that was a travel shell and used to magnetic lasso and changed the color to all black to make it match the animation of the car. We also warped the text on the right and used the shape tool to make the sun. Dr. Estes suggested that instead of just warping the bumper, we warp the entire car to make it appear more upbeat and overall 'happy'. So the last image is the final product of our emotional design.

A Day in the Life- Visual Storytelling

For this assignment, we were asked to create a typical "day in the life" of our daily routine by using pictures. The five pictures I used were from Google and I edited them in PhotoShop. I put the before and after picture for each and created a video as well. The video used words as well as the pictures to tell the story of my day to day activities. To allow the video to be present in this blog, I uploaded it into my YouTube account and embedded it into my blog.
